FMJ vs JHP – What's the Difference?
Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammo is designed for high-volume shooting and range training. FMJ rounds have a soft core encased in a harder metal shell, making them reliable for feeding and cycling in both pistols and rifles. They are not designed to expand upon impact, which makes them less suitable for self-defense but ideal for practice and target shooting.
Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) ammo is engineered to expand upon contact with soft tissue. This expansion creates a larger wound channel and transfers more stopping power to the target. JHP rounds are the preferred choice for concealed carry, home defense, and law enforcement due to their ability to reduce overpenetration and neutralize threats effectively.
While FMJ is more affordable and commonly sold in bulk (like bulk 9mm or .223), JHP offers performance advantages when lives are on the line. It’s smart to stock both — use FMJ for training, and reserve your JHP rounds for real-world protection.
Steel vs Brass Ammo – Which Should You Buy?
Brass-cased ammunition is the industry standard for reliability, cleanliness, and reloadability. Brass is more malleable, which means it expands and seals better in the chamber, reducing fouling and wear. Most defensive and match-grade rounds use brass cases because of their superior performance and consistent ignition.
Steel-cased ammo, on the other hand, is less expensive and often imported from brands like Wolf and Tula. It’s ideal for high-volume range shooting on a budget. However, steel cases are not reloadable and can be slightly harder on your firearm’s extractor over time, particularly in AR-style rifles or firearms not designed for hard-case cycling.
In general, if you're looking to stockpile cheap .223 ammo or 7.62x39 for training or plinking, steel is a solid option. For serious use, competitions, or defensive ammo, brass is usually the smarter long-term investment.
How Much Ammo Should You Store?
The amount of ammo you should keep on hand depends on your shooting habits and intended use. At a minimum, many shooters recommend storing at least 500 rounds of your primary handgun and rifle calibers. This ensures you're ready for a few range sessions or defensive needs without relying on last-minute purchases.
If you're an active competitor, prepper, or home defense planner, storing 1,000 to 5,000+ rounds may be more appropriate. For calibers like 9mm, .223/5.56, and .308 — which are commonly used in training, sport shooting, and tactical scenarios — bulk purchases offer significant cost savings and reduce supply concerns during ammo shortages.
With programs like Shoot & Subscribe™, you don’t have to worry about falling below your preferred ammo stock level. You can automate replenishment every month and ensure you always have what you need when it counts.
